The seven members of the European team for the PING Junior Solheim Cup 2021

With just six weeks to go until the 2021 PING Junior Solheim Cup, seven members of the European team have been confirmed, including Cayetana Fernández and Andrea Revuelta, two of the most brilliant Spanish amateurs of the 2021 season.

The 2021 PING Junior Solheim Cup will be played on September 1 and 2 at Sylvania Country Club in Toledo, Ohio (USA) as a prelude to the Solheim Cup to be held September 4-6 at Inverness Club in the same location. Annika Sörenstam, one of the best players in the history of the sport, is the captain of the European team.

Cayetana Fernández, recent winner of the Spanish Absolute Championship held in early June at the Real Club de Golf de La Coruña, and Andrea Revuelta, Spanish U-18 champion at Sherry Golf (Jerez de la Frontera), will be part of the European team that will face the United States in the eleventh PING Junior Solheim Cup.

Following the selection of these players, Paula Martín and Rocío Tejedo are the golfers who will finally enjoy an unforgettable week in Ohio thanks to the Objective 2023 Program, an initiative promoted by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, in coordination with the company Deporte & Business, which has offered its top ranked players the opportunity to experience the Solheim Cup.

Paula Martín won this ranking thanks to her victory in the Puntuable Nacional Juvenil Femenino at Lauro Golf and her spectacular consistency in the other three events, while Rocío Tejedo won the U-16 Spanish Championship at Alicante Golf and finished fourth in the Objetivo 2023 ranking.

The purpose of the program, of the PING Junior Solheim Cup 2021

The purpose of this program is to improve the performance of elite golfers and encourage competition among the youngest golfers with the option of qualifying for the European team of the PING Junior Solheim Cup 2023, and both Cayetana Fernandez and Andrea Revuelta have exceeded all expectations by anticipating, thanks to their quality, and qualify for the 2021 edition of this competition despite still being in cadet category because of their age.

Undoubtedly, both will be two of the aspirants to repeat in the team in two years, when this junior competition will be played before the Solheim Cup 2023, which will take place for the first time in the history of our country in September 2023 at Finca Cortesin (Andalusia, Costa del Sol).

In addition to the aforementioned Spaniards, captain Annika Sörenstam has announced five other golfers: Denmark’s Amalie Leth-Nissen, France’s Constance Fouillet, Germany’s Paula Schulz-Hanßen and Sweden’s Meja Örtengren and Nora Sundberg. The remaining five players will be announced on July 26.

The qualifying system for this year’s PING Junior Solheim Cup was updated in January 2021 in the wake of the covid-19 pandemic and the remarkable impact it has had on everyone’s safety and lives.

As travel restrictions have influenced the qualification process, the team has been selected taking into account several factors, such as performances in the PING Junior Solheim Cup qualifying tournaments, performance in other national and international tournaments, reports from the national team coaches and the opinion of the captain, Annika Sorenstam.

“We have had a very strange couple of years because of covid and many national teams have not been able to travel, so the girls have not had as many playing opportunities. That said, it’s a pleasure to announce these seven members of the European PING Junior Solheim Cup team. We have a young team but one that is brimming with talent and I am really looking forward to working with them,” said Sörenstam, an eight-time Solheim Cup player.

Nora Angehrn, former LET player and Swiss national team coach, will be vice-captain of the European team.

The PING Junior Solheim Cup, a biennial competition that began in 2002, is designed to offer younger female golfers from both sides of the Atlantic the opportunity to gain international match-play experience while competing alongside the professionals competing in the Solheim Cup.

Many European stars excelled at the PING Junior Solheim Cup before excelling at the Solheim Cup. Carlota Ciganda, Azahara Muñoz and Caroline Masson all triumphed as amateurs before lifting the Solheim Cup crystal trophy, and ten of the twelve members of the European team that won at Gleneagles in 2019 had previously played some edition of the PING Junior Solheim Cup.

The Solheim Cup 2023, an event of exceptional public interest whose official venue is Finca Cortesín, is sponsored by PING, Costa del Sol and Rolex as
